Arsenal's need for activity in the January transfer window was made abundantly clear with a woeful performance against Nottingham Forest.
The early FA Cup exit highlighted the lack of depth in problem areas of the squad and puts the pressure on heading into a huge week with clashes against Liverpool and Tottenham.
Midfield and a new striker are top of the wishlist, with those issues exacerbated by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's exile and the involvement of players at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Unsurprisingly, there's already a wealth of rumours floating around this month and we've run the rule over some of the latest.
Three-man midfield shortlist
Arsenal's search for a new central midfielder in January has led the club to create a three-man shortlist, the Sun states.
Lyon's Bruno Guimaraes, a player who has been of interest to Arsenal since his time in South America, is said to top the list but the Gunners have identified a couple of alternative options.
Juventus' Arthur Melo, a player who has reportedly been offered to a number of clubs this month, is also said to be of interest - alongside with an unidentified third player.
Our verdict
As it stands, Arsenal's only fit, senior and available central midfielder for the double-header this week is Albert Sambi Lokonga - so time cannot be wasted in the pursuit.
Bruno Guimaraes would be a dream addition, while Arthur is the sort of signing that may raise eyebrows given he would be an expensive deal - but there's no reason Mikel Arteta shouldn't be looking to sign both.
Even when Granit Xhaka is fit and players return from the Africa Cup of Nations, Arsenal's central-midfield options stand are thin so issues could easily raise their head again.
Lacazette contract stance
Alexandre Lacazette is one of three forwards who could depart Arsenal as his contract, along with Eddie Nketiah's, is set to expire this summer and Aubameyang is out in the cold.
According to TeamTalk, this has led to a change in stance as Arteta is said to be pushing the club to extend the deal of the Frenchman.
Lacazette has regularly stood in as captain amid Aubameyang's exile and is a leader within the dressing room, so any departure would have a significant impact.
